Miriam Desacada - The Philippine Star

CATBALOGAN CITY, Philippines — Soldiers overran an abandoned camp of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay Bay-ang, San Jorge, Samar on Tuesday, according to an official.

Capt. Francis Agno, 8th Infantry Division (ID) spokesman, said the NPA camp had four multi-purpose halls, a mess hall, a classroom with medical facilities, supply room, seven toilets, five kitchens and bunkers. A landmine, generators, guns, water containers and bomb materials were among those recovered at the scene.

Maj. Gen. Raul Farnacio, 8th ID commander, commended villagers for reporting the presence of NPA rebels in the area.

Government troopers were pursuing the perpetrators of a recent bomb explosion that left nine soldiers wounded when they chanced upon the NPA camp.
