Joy Belmonte hopes for zero firecracker-injuries
MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte yesterday reminded residents of the existing ban on the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in public places.
Belmonte urged the public to celebrate the New Year safely by doing away with firecrackers and instead resort to noisemakers such as horns.
“Let’s stop using these harmful devices. The drop in firecracker-related injuries last year was commendable, but there are others who still use banned firecrackers,” she said.
“Let us aim for zero casualties this year. I think it is possible if everyone will be responsible to follow the ordinance and report those who will sell and use firecrackers,” the vice mayor added.
Belmonte cited an ordinance, which prohibits the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in public places in Quezon City.
The ordinance has been in effect since October last year.
Violators may be fined up to P5,000 and ordered imprisoned for up to a year depending on the discretion of the court.
“I know firecrackers have been a part of our tradition during the New Year’s Eve, but let us not compromise our safety, let’s get rid of it totally,” Belmonte said.
She said hospitals in the city are prepared to accommodate victims of firecracker-related injuries.
