MANILA, Philippines — Surigao del Sur Gov. Vicente Pimentel Jr. passed away on Tuesday. He was 71.
A report on GMA News Online quoted Pimentel’s brother Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel as saying that the governor died in his sleep.
Details about the cause of death of the governor, his wake and interment have yet to be announced.
Senior Superintendent Francisco Dungo, Surigao del Sur police director, said they are still waiting for the official statement of the family.
Pimentel filed his certificate of candidacy to seek reelection in next year’s polls. He withdrew his candidacy in November, reportedly for health reasons.
His brother Tandag City Mayor Alexander Pimentel is running as his substitute.
