MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health, Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and World Health Organization (WHO) have partnered to stop smoking at the Baguio City Economic Zone (BCEZ).

The three agencies recently launched a campaign dubbed “Revolution Smoke-Free” to reduce cigarette consumption at the economic zone.

Gundo Weiler, WHO representative to the Philippines, said the campaign “envisions a future wherein all types of workplaces from various industries are free from tobacco smoke.”

“Business leaders are at the forefront of progress and innovation. As drivers of change in their industries, they have the power to spur a movement toward a future with healthier and safer working environments,” Weller said in a statement.

Charito Plaza, PEZA director general, said the BCEZ as a model smoke-free ecozone is supported by the Baguio City government and endorsed by its locators.

“PEZA will require other economic zones... to follow this example... This is a living testimony on how we can show concern for the health and welfare of our employees, their families and the entire nation,” Plaza said.
