DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Officials and residents of Compostela Valley yesterday welcomed the passage by the Senate of a bill seeking to rename their province Davao de Oro.
The Senate Bill 1746 was passed on Monday night and is awaiting the signature of President Duterte for it to become law.
The bill was authored by Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri.
Compostela Valley Gov. Jayvee Tyron Uy said they have been wanting to change the name of their province as it is the only province in Southern Mindanao or Davao region that does not bear the name “Davao.”
The region is composed of five provinces – Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental.
“The change of name is primarily motivated by our desire to be associated with the Davao region,” Uy said in a statement.
He said the renaming of the province would mean more investments.
Uy said people tend to mistake the province for Cagayan Valley in Luzon or Compostela town in Cebu.
