2 BIR execs arrested for extortion

MANILA, Philippines — Two officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) were arrested yesterday during an entrapment operation for allegedy extorting  P2 million from a company.

BIR Manila regional district officer Bethshiba Bautista and examiner Rachel Villanueva were nabbed inside the BIR office in Intramuros. 

The operation was conducted by agents of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission. 

Senior Superintendent Segundo Lagundi of the CIDG said Bautista and Villanueva supposedly asked for P2 million to settle the company’s tax liabilities.

Of the amount, police said only P500,000 would be remitted to the BIR and the remaining P1.5 million would be “for the girls.” 

Police said charges of bribery and extortion would be filed against the suspects.
