MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City Council is asking the Supreme Court (SC) to designate a special court to handle local ordinance offenders.
The city council passed a resolution urging the SC to designate a special court to handle cases that pertain to violations of local ordinances in a bid to declog municipal and regional trial courts.
City Resolution 7601-2018, introduced by Councilors Gian Carlo Sotto and Godofredo Liban II, stated that violations of city ordinances contribute to the heavy workload of trial courts.
“The inordinate delay in the resolution of cases involving the infraction of city or municipal ordinances causes the clogging of detention cells, vulnerability of inmates to illnesses and injustices for languishing in jail more than the penalty to be imposed on them,” the resolution read.
The city government earlier passed an ordinance that provides procedures for the issuance of ordinance violation receipts for local law offenders.
