MMDA to redesign P10-million Kamuning footbridge
MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will modify the controversial P10-million footbridge across EDSA in Kamuning, Quezon City after receiving flak from the public.
Bong Nebrija, supervising operations officer of the MMDA, said the launching of the bridge would be moved to Nov. 27.
The agency initially planned to open the footbridge to pedestrians on Nov. 15.
Nebrija said they would build a landing in the middle of the footbridge to break the structure into two smaller bridges, which will serve as a “resting place” for pedestrians.
A photo of the footbridge, which goes over the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) railway, went viral on social media after netizens said it is not accessible to the elderly, pregnant women and persons with disability (PWDs).
MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia said the footbridge was not designed for senior citizens and PWDs.
Garcia explained that the bridge’s height should be three to four meters above the catenary wires or power lines of the MRT-3 for safety reasons.
The MMDA received flak over the footbridge, which netizens described as a “stairway to heaven.”
