Reds surrender in Capiz, Sibugay
MANILA, Philippines — At least 59 communist rebels surrendered in Capiz and 16 others in Zamboanga Sibugay in the past two days.
At least 52 members of the Militia ng Bayan under the Komiteng Rehiyon Panay- Eastern Front Committee and eight New People’s Army (NPA) rebels turned themselves in to the municipal government of Cuartero town in Capiz and the 61st Infantry Battalion (IB).
The rebels surrendered a Garand, a caliber .45 pistol, 10 shotguns, two caliber .38 pistols, a hand grenade and various types of ammunition.
Col. Benedict Arevalo, 301st Infantry Brigade commander, said it took them six months to convince the communists to surrender.
Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo showed that 15 of the surrenderees in Zamboanga Sibugay are also members of the Militia ng Bayan.
The rebels turned over a caliber .45 pistol and two shotguns.
Mayor Jarvis Acosta of Siay town and Lt. Col. Jonathan Obena, 44th IB commander, facilitated the surrender.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines gave assurance that the government is committed to ensuring the safety of the returnees from their former comrades. – Michael Punongbayan, Jennifer Rendon
