LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines – Chief Inspector Jovie Espenido has been appointed as the new police chief of Catanduanes.

Philippine National Police chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said Espenido’s new post is a ”career move” that will pave the way for a promotion.

“He has a pending promotion... His reassignment is part... of his promotion,”Albayalde said.

Legazpi Mayor Noel Rosal said Chief Superintendent Arnel Escobal, Bicol police director, informed him on Sunday that Espenido’s appointment would take effect next week.

“This is a positive development for the campaign against illegal drugs in Bicol because there’s a perception that illegal drug transactions are ongoing not just in Catanduanes,” Rosal said.

Espenido had led drug raids in Ozamiz City that killed Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog, his wife and several other family members.

Espenido was also assigned in Albuera, Leyte when former mayor Rolando Espinosa was killed in a raid on the provincial jail. – Cecille Suerte Felipe
