MANILA, Philippines — Makati Mayor Abby Binay is determined to seek reelection even if it means running against her brother, former mayor Junjun Binay, in the May 2019 elections.
Abby said yesterday she has the backing of her father, former vice president Jejomar Binay.
She said the elder Binay had signed her certificate of nomination and acceptance (CONA) under the United Nationalist Alliance, making her the official candidate of UNA for mayor.
Abby said her father gave his “blessing” before leaving the country for a pilgrimage last month.
CONA is a document submitted by the candidates together with their certificate of candidacy with the Commission on Elections, or they would be declared as an independent.
“The party issued the CONA in my favor. Isn’t it enough indication of his endorsement?” Abby said.
She said the former vice president had advised Junjun to give way to her in the mayoral race.
“Sinabihan ng daddy ko na ‘wag na siyang tumakbo. My father is trying to come up with a solution. Unfortunately, someone has to give in, there is no such thing as a win-win solution,” she said.
Abby said she would file her candidacy next week.
