Gloria Arroyo gives House of Representatives employees P35,000 for groceries
MANILA, Philippines — Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday surprised House of Representatives employees when she announced that the House would give out a grocery allowance of P35,000 this month.
“Last August, with the hard work of accounts committee chairperson (Leyte Rep.) Yedda (Marie) Romualdez, you received a grocery allowance of P5,000,” she told the employees during the monthly flag-raising ceremony.
Arroyo said that this month, with the help of Romualdez, “I have been able to authorize the release of P35,000” to each of the House’s employees, who number around 3,000.
The Speaker said the P35,000 special allowance is on top of the P5,000 grocery and meal allowance that was given last August to each House employee – a total of P40,000 – since she took over the reins of the chamber on July 23.
