Quezon City suspends classes on Monday for Manuel Quezon birth anniversary

MANILA, Philippines — Classes in all levels in Quezon City are suspended on Monday to commemorate the 140th birth anniversary of former president Manuel Quezon. 

The class suspension was issued as Quezon’s birthday anniversary, which is on Aug. 19, fell on a Sunday this year. 

“The suspension is to allow the student community to commemorate the birth anniversary of (former president) Quezon in fitting localized ceremonies and activities,” read the memorandum signed by city administrator Aldrin Cuña. 

Several activities are lined up to commemorate the birth anniversary of Quezon next week. 

Local officials, led by Mayor Herbert Bautista and Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte, are expected to lead the wreath-laying activities at the museum of Manuel Quezon at the Quezon Memorial Circle on Sunday morning. 

Israeli Ambassador Ephraim Ben Matityau will also attend as the guest of honor. 

The activity will be followed by the inauguration of the Presidential Car Museum and the Philippine-Israel Friendship Park, also at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

  Quezon was instrumental in saving the lives of over 1,000 Jewish refugees during the Second World War.
