CAMP FLORENDO, La Union, Philippines — The alleged gunman in the killing of Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative president Rey Ruiz on Sept. 4, 2009 was killed in Badoc, Ilocos Norte on Thursday.

Rogelio Riñen, 49, was driving his motorcycle when he was shot by an unidentified man who alighted from a red car in Barangay Saud at around 1 p.m.

Riñen was pronounced dead on arrival at the Sto. Cristo Milagroso Hospital.

Chief Superintendent Romulo Sapitula, Ilocos police director, said Riñen was a contract killer tapped by some politicians in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.

Ruiz was shot dead in Barangay Lang-ayan, Currimao town.

Former Dingras mayor Marineth Gamboa, who was unseated in 2010, was tagged as the mastermind.  – Raymund Catindig
