BJMP officer slain in ambush

MANILA, Philippines — A Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) officer was killed in an ambush in Sta. Ana, Manila yesterday morning.

Inspector George Delfin, 49, was driving his red Mitsubishi Adventure (PJQ-551) along Sagrada street when a motorcycle-riding assailant drew up alongside his vehicle and shot him through the front passenger window before Delfin reached the corner of Orobi street at around 10:17 a.m., according to Manila Police District (MPD) homicide investigator Senior Police Officer 3 Jonathan Bautista.

When Delfin’s Adventure hit a Grab taxi, the assailant stopped his motorcycle, reloaded his gun and shot the victim repeatedly, Bautista said.

Delfin, who was detailed at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City, died at the scene, where nine spent shells from a 9mm pistol where recovered, he added.

Delfin’s widow said she has no idea if her husband had enemies.

A source at the BJMP told The STAR that Delfin survived an ambush in 2002.

MPD homicide chief Senior Inspector Rommel Anicete said among the possible motives they are looking into are Delfin’s quarrel with a person in the barangay and two hitmen he singlehandedly arrested several years ago. 

Anicete said the two hitmen served time in prison but were released.
