Politics eyed in ex-Batangas vice mayor’s assassination attempt
CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — The assassination attempt on a former vice mayor of Sto. Tomas town in Batangas on Saturday night may be politically motivated, police said yesterday.
Superintendent Rex Gaoiran, Sto. Tomas police chief, said probers are looking at politics as the likely motive for the gun attack that left Ferdinand Ramos critically wounded.
“Although Ramos did not declare his intention to run for any position in next’s elections, the victim repeatedly received death threats when he was vice mayor from 2013 to 2016... He was not allowed to leave the house during the elections because of such threats,” Gaoiran said.
Ramos suffered a gunshot wound in the face and was transferred from the St. Cabrini Hospital to an undisclosed hospital.
The lone gunman, who according to witnesses was holding an umbrella, fled on foot.
Probers are reviewing footages of closed-circuit television cameras near the scene to identify the gunman.
Gaoiran said a task force is investigating the incident.
