Barangay execs, drug suspects slain in shootings
MANILA, Philippines — Two barangay officials were killed by unidentified assailants in Samar and Zamboanga City in the past two days.
Mark Anthony Giray, chairman of Barangay Cagmanipi in Calbayog, was driving his motorcycle with Boyet Dura on their way home when they were shot in Barangay Marcatubig at around 6 p.m. on Friday. They were pronounced dead on arrival in a hospital.
At least 25 bullet shells for an M16 rifle and a caliber .45 pistol were recovered at the scene.
In Zamboanga City, Michael Magallanes, councilman of Barangay Sta. Catalina, was on his way to a feeding program in Sitio Lustre when he was shot at around 7:19 a.m. yesterday.
Probers have yet to determine if the killings were politically motivated or drug-related.
Meanwhile, suspected drug pushers Donald Gutierrez and an alias Ronelio, a resident of Baliuag, Bulacan, were killed in alleged shootouts with police officers in stings in Barangay Culipat, Tarlac City and Concepcion, San Simon, Pampanga, respectively.
