Magnitude 5.2 quake strikes Batangas
A magnitude 5.2 earthquake shook Batangas on Tuesday afternoon.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Tuesday afternoon recorded a magnitude 5.2 earthquake that jolted Batangas.

The tremor occurred at around 12:25 p.m. Its epicenter was traced 25 kilometers southwest of Nasugbu, Batangas.

The quake was felt at Intensity IV in Lubang and Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro.

It was also felt at Intensity III in the following areas:

  • Balayan, Tuy, Talisay and Calatagan, Batangas;

  • Quezon City;

  • Clark, Pampanga; 

  • Mandaluyong City;

  • Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro;

  • Looc and Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro; 

  • Tanza and Maragondon, Cavite;

  • Makati City and

  • Pasay City

The residents of Manila, Plaridel, Obando and Malolos, Bulacan as well as Parañaque City, on the other hand, felt the quake at Intensity II.

Phivolcs also recorded the quake in various instrumental intensities which appear below:

  • Intensity III - Malolos, Bulacan; Calatagan, Batangas; Tagaytay City; Cavite City

  • Intensity II - Marikina City; Navotas City; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; Talisay, Batangas

  • Intensity I - Las Pinas City; Pasig City; Quezon City; Bacoor Cavite; Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija; Guagua, Pampanga.

The institute categorized earthquake with Intensity scale IV as moderately strong meaning it is felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors.

Phivolcs said there was no damage from the quake but it warned the public of aftershocks.

There were nine other quakes recorded on Tuesday. These occurred in Batanes, Occidental Mindoro, Davao Oriental, Bohol, Davao Occidental, Eastern Samar, Biliran and Leyte.

All quakes were determined to be tectonic in origin.
