MANILA, Philippines — A policeman was arrested in Quezon City yesterday in connection with a multimillion-peso investment scam that victimized other police officers.
Senior Police Officer 1 Honorio Negrito, 52, was apprehended at his residence along Road 2 in Barangay West Crame at around 4 p.m. during the implementation of a search warrant.
Negrito is wanted for 10 counts of estafa in the warrant issued by Judge Edith Mina-Aguba of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 100.
Negrito was assigned to the Cubao police station prior to his arrest.
Superintendent Rodelio Marcelo, head of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, said Negrito is allegedly a one-man investment scammer who primarily targeted his fellow police officers.
His victims ranged from rookies to ranking officials, some of whom invested almost P1 million from their retirement funds.
Marcelo said at least 10 complainants filed estafa charges against Negrito before the Quezon City prosecutor’s office, which recommended that bail bet set at P400,000.
Negrito, who started the scam in 2005, supposedly promised a return of P6,000 per month for a P100,000 investment.
