Luzon grid on yellow alert
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Energy (DOE) will revisit its supply and demand forecast as the Luzon grid was placed on yellow alert for the fourth straight day yesterday.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) raised the alert from noon to 4 p.m., citing the unexpected shutdown and limited generation of some power plants as well as high demand.
Available capacity was estimated at 11,354 megawatts while peak demand was projected to reach 10,615 MW.
A yellow alert means there were not enough reserves to cover the largest running generating unit at the time, but does not necessarily lead to power outages.
DOE assistant secretary Redentor Delola said the increased demand was outside the franchise area of the Manila Electric Co.
However, Delola clarified that a yellow alert is not a reason for concern.
“We have enough supply. It just happened that there was a plant that went on outage that’s why the Luzon grid was placed on yellow alert. But we have enough supply,” he said.
