MALOLOS, Philippines — At least P17 million worth of milkfish have been affected in the fish kill in Obando, Bulacan.

Personnel of the Bulacan agriculture office and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) conducted water analysis of affected fish ponds yesterday. These are in Barangays Pag-Asa, Paliwas, Hulo, Lawa, Paco, Tawiran and Salambao.

Provincial agriculturist Ma. Gloria Carillo said initial findings showed the fish kill was due to the water’s extremely low oxygen content.

Carillo said fish health inspection teams would return to the area to validate their findings.

She said they are also checking if fish ponds in other barangays were affected.

Around 150 hectares of fish ponds have been affected by the fish kill since Saturday, according to BFAR-Central Luzon director Wilfredo Cruz.

Local officials had blamed the fish kill on intense heat and the earthquake that hit parts of Luzon on Saturday.
