2 held for election gun ban in Marikina

MANILA, Philippines — Two motorcycle-riding men were arrested at a checkpoint in Marikina City for violating the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban on Saturday night.

Danilo Bello and Gerardo Meren were nabbed by police after a brief chase at the corner West Drive and Narra streets in Barangay Marikina Heights at around 11:30 p.m.

Bello yielded a 9mm handgun while a bladed weapon was confiscated from  Meren, according to city police chief Senior Superintendent Roger Quesada.

The two were on a motorcycle when they ignored the Comelec checkpoint, Quesada said.

Instead of pulling over, Bello and Meren sped away, prompting authorities to give chase.

Police said they issued a traffic violation ticket to Bello after he failed to present documents for his motorcycle.

Charges of violating the Omnibus Election Code will be filed against the suspects.
