Ban swimming in Manila Bay – DOH

Children from Baseco Compound in Tondo cool off in the polluted water of Manila Bay yesterday.

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) yesterday urged the Manila city government to stop people from swimming in Manila Bay to prevent summer diseases.

“The local government should intensify security along the Manila Bay to prohibit the public, especially children from swimming in the polluted water,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque said.

Duque said people are expected to flock to Manila Bay to cool off this summer.

He said the city government should exert efforts to ban people from swimming in the bay so as not to acquire water-borne diseases.

Duque said among the illnesses the public may acquire from swimming in the bay are diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, dysentery, eye infection and skin diseases.

Mayor Joseph Estrada has issued  an order banning swimming in Manila Bay.
