ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Seventeen inmates, most of them facing drug charges, escaped from a detention facility in a local police station in this city yesterday. 

Senior Superintendent Vincent Neri Ignacio, city police director, said 13 escapees were recaptured and one surrendered. 

A certain William Pajarado reportedly led the jailbreak by cutting the iron grill of their cell at about 2:50 a.m.  

Pursuit operations for the remaining escapees are ongoing.
