MANILA, Philippines — With Boracay’s impending closure for six months, the Cebu provincial government has called on tourists to consider Cebu as their alternative destination.

Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III yesterday urged city and municipal officials to prepare for the possible influx of tourists in the province during summer.

“Cebu should expect that tourists bound for Boracay… may come to Cebu or Bohol,” Davide told The Freeman.

He said Bantayan island, also known as “Little Boracay,” with its white sand and long shoreline, is among the top tourist destinations in Cebu.

He also cited Sumilon, Malapascua, and Camotes group of islands, Oslob and Moalboal, which are famous for whale shark watching and its diving spots.

Davide said he is confident that resort owners and managers as well as tourist guides could ensure the safety of their guests.

“Be prepared for the influx of tourists… be prepared with your facilities,” he said.

President Duterte approved the recommendation of the Departments of the Interior and Local Government, Environment and Natural Resources and Tourism to close Boracay to tourists starting April 26 to allow its rehabilitation.

Duterte had decried the environmental degradation of the island, and called it a cesspool.
