MANILA, Philippines — Scheduled maintenance on three major train systems in the country commenced Thursday as the country observes Holy Week.
The Light Rail Transit, Philippine National Railways and Metro Rail Transit earlier announced stoppage of operations to start their individual maintenance activities.

The ongoing maintenance for the PNR included scheduled rail tracks and railway sleeper replacement along Manila division between its Calamba and Tutuban stations.
The PNR and DOST Metals Industry Research Development Center are also set to test the DOST Hybrid Electric Train and will undertake Reliability Availability Maintenability Safety (RAMS) assessment to obtain operational certification this April.
The Department of Transportation said DOST HETs are locally designed and developed hybrid electric trains that can run on standard PNR railroad tracks.
LRT-2 is also undergoing scheduled maintenance and improving its train coaches, rail tracks, electrical systems and station facilities. The annual activity is conducted to increase the train line's capacity and ensure a safer, more convenient, and comfortable commuter experience.
DOTr officials also conducted an inspection of the general maintenance works on the entire MRT-3 system. MRT-3 has been widely criticized due to its frequent operations stoppage from various glitches including decoupling of coaches.
Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and Undersecretary for Railways TJ Batan, MRT-3 General Manager Rudy Garcia, and MRT-3 Director for Operations Mike Capati personally made the inspection to make sure that all processes are observed smoothly, and maintenance works are implemented on schedule.
Tugade also visited the MRT-3 spare parts warehouse and was disappointed with the disorganized and unsecured records or inventory keeping.
He said the fast-moving spare parts often used should be placed at the front of the warehouse while long-life ones should be placed at the back.
“I’m not happy with your records-keeping. I’m not happy with your inventory-keeping,” Tugade said.
“Inventory is important because this is where we would know if you are ordering beyond the limit,” he added in Filipino.
The LRT, MRT are set to resume operations on Monday, April 2. The PNR Metro South, however, will resume normal operations on Easter Sunday, April 1.
