‘Town mayors support federalism’
MANILA, Philippines — More than 1,000 town mayors are supporting a federal form of government, officials of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) said yesterday.
President Duterte is expected to grace the annual LMP general assembly with the theme “Federalism Now,” to be attended by 1,400 mayors, Ma. Fe Brondial, LMP president and mayor of Socorro, Oriental Mindoro, said.
Brondial said the three-day event, which started yesterday, would be a venue to urge Congress to prioritize amendments in the 1987 Constitution to change into a federal form of government.
“The President and leaders of Congress are destined to make federalism happen. The mayors support the move to federalism and will rally the people behind the shift to a new system of government,” she said.
Don Abalon, LMP spokesman and mayor of San Roque, Northern Samar, said they are “thrilled” at the prospect of genuine autonomy and decentralization under a federal form of government.
Abalon said mayors are eager to participate in the discussions on federalism.
Jess Burahan, mayor of Panglima Tahil, Sulu and LMP secretary-general, said they would push for the realization of the programs of the Duterte administration.
