TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Philippines — An Army soldier died after New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked a military detachment in Barangay Poblacion, Balbalan, Kalinga on Sunday. 

A report received by Kalinga police director Senior Superintendent Alfredo Dangani identified the fatality as Pfc. Samuel Neri, who was hit by a grenade lobbed by the rebels.

Around 25 NPA rebels attacked the detachment of the 50th Army Battalion in Sitio Guisang, triggering a 25-minute firefight, according to the report.
