TUBA, Benguet, Philippines — Baguio’s garbage woes continue as residents of nearby Tuba town sought the transfer of the city’s garbage staging area along Marcos highway.
The municipal council of Tuba called on Mayor Ignacio Rivera to stop the operations of the transfer facility at the boundary of Baguio and Tuba near the town’s Barangay Upper Poblacion. Baguio started to dump garbage in the facility on Jan. 13.
“This is a national road…People may think we are the ones dumping waste when it is the city of Baguio,” Tuba Vice Mayor Clarita Sal-ongan said.
Sal-ongan expressed concern that Baguio’s garbage problem would worsen with the influx of tourists during the Panagbenga season.
Baguio produces more than 200 tons of garbage on regular days.
Residents of Barangay Poblacion had earlier signed a petition opposing the garbage staging area, which is near residential houses, business establishments and schools, adding that it could affect water sources in the area.
