MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fire Protection on Sunday morning declared that the three-day-long fire in a Cebu mall is now under control.

A report from The Freeman said BFP-Central Visayas Director Samuel Tadeo announced that the blaze which engulfed the Metro Ayala building last Friday was put under control at around 12:45 p.m. on Sunday.

The authorities expect the fire to be out by Sunday afternoon.

“Combined efforts to suppress the fire continue at the Metro Department Store in Ayala Center Cebu,” Ayala Center Cebu said in a statement released at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

“The BFP and emergency response teams made significant progress, and we hope to be able to extinguish the fire soon,” it added.

The mall's management said the establishment would remain closed until the fire is extinguished and they have done their full systems check.

“Safety is our primary consideration,” it said.

The management thanked the community for their continued support and understanding.

Earlier, Ayala Center Cebu said the fire started around 9:30 p.m. on Friday when smoke was detected from the Metro Ayala building. The customers and personnel were safely evacuated.
