MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Police District on Tuesday confirmed that a grenade was found in front of the University of the East in Recto, Manila.
A street sweeper early Tuesday found the suspicious package and reported it, prompting inspection of the vicinity.
The MPD identified the explosive as "MK2 fragmentation hand grenade," which according to authorities, requires a detonator to function.
“Hindi siya capable to explode without detonator, ibig sabihin walang detonator, kulang siya. Pero ito’y naka-safety pa, nakata-tape, intact ‘yung kanyang safety pin,” Senior Inspector Arnold Santos of the Explosives and Ordnance Division said in a radio interview with dzMM.
The authorities are reportedly coordinating with the university to obtain a CCTV footage pertinent to the grenade planting.
The MPD has cleared the vicinity and UE Manila said classes will push through.
"This morning's suspected item outside the vicinity of UE Manila's Recto gate has been removed and the gate is now open," UE Manila said in an official statement released online. — Rosette Adel
