3 NPA rebels face arson raps
SARANGANI, Philippines – Three suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels have been charged with arson for burning more than a dozen passenger buses plying the Sarangani-South Cotabato route last year.
Jojo Calis Bulahing, Bandrang Yasmin and Damo Raymund were arrested in Maasim, Sarangani on July 30, Superintendent Romeo Galgo Jr., Soccsksargen police spokesman, said yesterday.
The rebels admitted to the crime and yielded fragmentation grenades, a .45-caliber pistol and pieces of paper containing a list of construction companies, police said.
Bulahing, an alleged NPA commander, is wanted for various crimes, including robbery, murder and frustrated murder. He reportedly told investigators that their planned attacks on companies that refuse to pay so-called revolutionary tax were put on hold after martial law was declared in Mindanao.
Lt. Col. Benjamin Leander of the 27th Infantry Battalion thanked residents in Barangay Kablacan for helping locate the hideout of the rebels.
President Duterte cited extortion activities of NPA rebels in scrapping peace talks with the communists.
