LANAO DEL SUR, Philippines — Rescuers buried Monday the remains of 27 still unidentified people who were killed in the ongoing siege of Marawi City by combined Maute terrorists and Abu Sayyaf bandits.

The victims are believed to have been caught in the crossfire between terrorists and security forces who have been battling for control of strategic areas in Marawi City since May 23.

Salma Jayne Tamano, information officer of the Lanao del Sur provincial government, said the burial was facilitated by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

The remains of the 27 people, kept for almost two months in a local mortuary, were buried by rescue and emergency personnel in a lot owned by the Lanao del Sur provincial government in Marawi City.

Tamano said the cadavers were found scattered by rescuers in different parts of Marawi City, which security forces have been clearing for the last two months.

The trouble in Marawi City, which has since dragged on, caused the dislocation of more than 300,000 residents and has prompted the declaration of martial law in Mindanao. The state of martial law has been extended to Dec. 31, 2017.

Tamano said provincial officials helped facilitate the burial of the 27 victims, whose identities have never been established.
