MANILA, Philippines - An official of the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) police was wounded in an ambush in Antipolo City yesterday.
Superintendent Noel Versoza, 50, of the Calabarzon police personnel division was fueling up at a gas station along J.P. Rizal street in Barangay Dela Paz at about 6:15 a.m. when a motorcycle rider wearing a mask approached and opened fire. Versoza was hit in the left arm.
Although wounded, Versoza sped off and sought refuge at the Antipolo Cathedral.
He was initially taken to the Unciano Hospital, but transferred to the PNP General Hospital at Camp Crame.
Probers still have no leads on the slay attempt.
Senior Superintendent Alberto Ocon, Rizal police chief, said Versoza suspected that the motive could be work-related.
Versoza was former chief of police of Binangonan, Rizal.
Ocon said Versoza cited the intensified campaign against criminality, including illegal drugs during his term.
Superintendent Renado Rosero, Antipolo police chief, was tasked to lead the probe into the incident.
