State of calamity in Lamitan due to floods
ZAMBOANGA CITY , Philippines – The city government of Lamitan in Basilan declared a state of calamity on Tuesday after a flash flood hit the city over the weekend.
Mayor Rose Furigay said the declaration was in response to the recommendation of the city council to fast-track assistance to affected villages.
Furigay said 11 of the 45 barangays in the city were affected by the flooding.More than 3,000 families, remain in evacuation centers.
The city disaster risk reduction and management office said more than 100 houses were destroyed.
The local agriculture office said damage to crops was estimated at P10 million. The city engineer’s office and the Department of Public Works and Highways have yet to assess the damage to infrastructure.
Massive flooding was also reported in Polomolok, South Cotabato after the Silway River overflowed on Monday due to heavy rains.
At least 15 hectares of rice and cornfields were inundated in Barangay Koronadal Proper and around 20 hectares of cassava and corn plantations in Purok Maharlika.
