Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A Filipina working as a domestic helper was beaten to death by her Kuwaiti employer, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported yesterday.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said he has ordered labor attaché Angelita Narvaez to closely monitor the case of Amy Santiago, who died at the Farwaniya Hospital on Jan. 25.

He also directed the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to release P200,000 death insurance and P20,000 burial assistance to Santiago’s family.

The OWWA will give Santiago’s dependents educational benefits and livelihood assistance and  shoulder the cost of repatriating Santiago’s remains.

Santiago’s employers are now detained and under investigation by the Kuwaiti police.
