KORONADAL CITY — Four drug traffickers tried but failed to punch through their concrete cell using spoons and forks in an attempt to bolt from the police detention facility.

Superintendent Barney Condes, chief of the Koronadal City police, said Rex Valeriano, 29, Lyndon Calanza, 29, Alex Mangudadatu, 23, and Rodelo Moliji, 18, were immediately transferred to a maximum security cell.

The suspects are being prosecuted for the large-scale peddling of methamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu in different barangays in Koronadal City.

Condes said policemen guarding the detention facility learned of their plot to escape from other inmates.

The four drug dealers were caught in the act of punching a hole on one side of their cell using spoons and forks, Condes said.

The foiled escape try prompted the city police to close the detention facility to visitors for the meantime.

Valeriano, Calanza, Mangudadatu and Moliji, charged with violation of the Philippine Dangerous Drugs Act, belong to one of a dozen local drug rings the police had arrested in a continuing crackdown since July this year.
