LIST: Where protests vs ‘sudden’ Marcos burial will be held
MANILA, Philippines – Various groups and universities are set to stage rallies in different areas to protest the unannounced burial of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani in Taguig City.
The organizations and university councils called on their respective communities to join the “Black Friday protest”. The groups previously held indignation rallies and protests when the Supreme Court dismissed petitions opposing allow the interment of Marcos' remains at the national heroes’ cemetery on November 8.
Chief Superintendent Oscar Albayalde, director of the National Capital Region Police Office, said they only learned of the plans for the burial on Thursday afternoon.
“Kahapon lang kami sinabihan na ngayon ang libing, pero prepared naman na kami,” he said.
Groups opposed to the burial say that Marcos is not a hero and does not deserve to be buried at the site, an argument that the Supreme Court did not heed. The court said that as a former soldier, Marcos could be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, which is a military shrine.
Hashtag #OccupyLNMB and #MarcosNotAHero are also among the current trending topics in the Philippines with over 4,800 and 8,800 tweets, respectively, as of posting.
