'Lawin' app helps protect Cordillera wildlife

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – A mobile app developed by USAID and the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources is now helping protect wildlife in the highland Cordillera region.
Environmental law enforcers already trained on the Landscape and Wildlife Information System (Lawin) app will help strengthen the Department of the Environemnt and Natural Resources' forest protection efforts and will help prevent activity which contributes to environmental degradation, Ralph Pablo, an enginner and DENR-Cordillera director, said.
Forest guards, forest rangers, forest technicians and information systems analysts who serve as forest and biodiversity protection officers in the region were trained this month on how Lawin works and how it can used for patrolling, data management and law enforcement.
Lawin was developed under USAID's Biodiversity and Watersheds Improved for Stronger Economy and Ecosystem Resilience (B+WISER) Program.
“Like lawin (hawk), it observes its environment in forests and reacts to any activity or changes in it. It monitors the condition of conservation areas to be identified and registered in the app overtime,” USAID's Felix Gaschick said.
Lawin has two aspects, the collection of data and using the data in decision-making or for better environmental law enforcement.
It has two components: Cybertracker, which is a multilingual open source of data, and Smart, which is a monitoring and reporting tool.
