MANILA, Philippines — The office of President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday noon announced the suspension of work in government offices in Metro Manila starting 1 p.m.

In a circular, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said inclement weather due to Typhoon Butchoy prompted the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to advise the suspension of work and classes in public schools.

Government agencies whose functions involve the "delivery of basic and health services, preparedness or response to disasters and calamities, and performance of other vital services," however, are expected to continue operations.

Medialdea noted that suspension of work for private companies, offices and schools is left to the discretion of their management.
