Sorsogon mayor charged with malversation

Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – A town mayor in Sorsogon has been indicted before the Sandiganbayan for failing to liquidate cash advances amounting to P3.170 million.

Sta. Magdalena Mayor Alejandro Gamos was charged with malversation of public funds the Office of the Ombudsman said yesterday.

Municipal accountant Roselyn Gile and municipal treasurer Virginia Laco were included in the charge sheet.

The Commission on Audit (COA) said Gamos made 52 cash advances amounting to P8.207 million with no stated purpose from 2004 to 2007.

Graft probers said P2,770,589.60 of the amount remained unaccounted for.

Gamos made another cash advance amounting to P400,000 in 2007, which was not recorded in the books of acccount.

“By failing to liquidate...despite demand by the COA, a prima facie presumption arises that he misappropriated the amount,” the ombudsman said.
