4,189 jaywalkers nabbed in Manila
MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has nabbed 4,189 jaywalkers from Dec. 31, 2015 to February 24 this year across Metro Manila.
MMDA Anti-Jaywalking Unit head, Chief Traffic Inspector Rodolfo Calpito said of those apprehended, 11 have rendered community service, while 559 paid the corresponding fine.
Meanwhile, some 3,630 jaywalkers have either yet to pay their fines or render community service.
The MMDA earlier intensified its drive against jaywalkers, specifically along the busy Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.
According to MMDA Traffic Discipline Office (TDO) director Crisanto Saruca, many pedestrians choose to take their chances in crossing Commonwealth Avenue instead of making use of the MMDA-installed footbridges.
"We want to emphasize that the campaign is for their own good. We are appealing to the public to make use of pedestrian lanes and footbridges," Saruca said.
Those caught violating the anti-jaywalking ordinance were asked by the apprehending MMDA personnel to pay the P500 fine or render community service.
