MANILA, Philippines – Security has been tightened in Sulu amid reports that the Abu Sayyaf is targeting civilians and government installations, particularly in Jolo.
Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, commander of Joint Task Group-Sulu, said they received reports that the bandit group has deployed six newly trained bombers, led by Majan Sajidjuan, alias Apo Mike.
Among the reported targets of the bombings are the Jolo Cathedral, Jolo market, naval vessels, karaoke bars frequented by policemen and soldiers, Coast Guard stations and business establishments.
The reports also cited planned roadside bombings along the Jolo-Tagbak highway.
Another bombing attempt was believed to have been averted with the discovery of an improvised bomb along the road in Patikul, Sulu on Thursday.
Arrojado said the bomb was planted some 200 meters away from an abandoned detachment in Sitio Bulabog in Barangay Bonbon.
He said the bomb was discovered a few hours after a convoy of Marine vehicles hit an improvised explosive device in Barangay Lagtoh in Talipao town that left seven soldiers injured.
Arrojado said five of the suspects were identified as Amrin Absara, Abral Alih, a certain Asaral, Tala Jumsah and Jumidin Wali, who were under the group of Radullan Sahiron, Amah Maas and Hajan Sawadjaan.
