Sierra Madre reforestation project extended

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has extended for another year its reforestation program on the Sierra Madre mountain range.

In a statement issued yesterday, DENR Secretary Ramon Paje said the project covers an additional 546 hectares in Laguna and Quezon, including open and denuded forests in the 6,765-hectare Laguna-Quezon Land Grant (LQLG) property of UP-Los Baños in Quezon.

UPLB vice chancellor Serlie Jamias requested the extension of the joint DENR-UPLB reforestation project last month.

“The Forest Management Bureau reported that since 2012, a total of 557 hectares within the LQLG have been planted with 279,300 indigenous tree seedlings,” Paje said.

As of December, the reforestation project covered 378 hectares in Real and 178 hectares in Siniloan.
