Worker dies after falling into hole in Marikina

Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — A worker died on Tuesday when he fell into a 10-foot hole at a construction site in Parang, Marikina City.

Marikina Vice Mayor Fabian Cadiz said in television reports that the victim, identified as Ernesto Espaldon, was digging a construction area in a perimeter fence being built when its soil caved in and caused him to fall into the hole with six feet of water.

He was also entombed past 11 in the morning of Tuesday.

"Ang nangyari mayroon pong pusali dun sa gilid at suddenly nag-collapse ho ‘yung lupa so natabunan siya ng malambot na lupa at nalubog siya sa tubig," Cadiz said.

Cadiz said Marikina rescuers arrived within ten minutes. The rescue operation, however, lasted about five hours since the hole was muddy and too deep, reports say. The Scene of the Crime Operatives also helped.

When the victim was recovered, he was immediately brought to the hospital but he was already declared dead.

Authorities are investigating the incident with the contractor of the project facing possible negligence charges over Espaldon's death.
