TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – Three soldiers were killed in an encounter with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Kalinga on Tuesday night.

Reports received by Senior Superintendent Victor Wanchakan, Kalinga police director, identified the fatalities only as Pfcs. Dayag, Abacan and Polar.

The victims were members of the Army’s 50th Infantry Battalion based in Langilang, Abra. ?

Police said they have launched pursuit operations for the rebels.

In Misamis Oriental, NPA rebels raided the Del Monte Philippines Inc. plantation in Barangay San Juan in Tanglad City on Tuesday night.

Senior Inspector Arnold Gaabucayan, Balingasag police chief, said the rebels torched a bulldozer and a Hummer-type truck.

No one was hurt in the attack.

Gaabucayan said the attack could be in retaliation for Del Monte’s refusal to pay “revolutionary tax.”
