CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines – A local leader of the Nationalist People’s Coalition in Laguna was shot dead in San Pedro City on Monday.

Anthony Gilbert Olivarez, 44, was in a cockpit in Barangay San Vicente around 2 p.m. when the gunman approached and shot him at close range, said Superintendent Ericson Dilag, San Pedro police chief.

Olivarez died while being treated at the Divine Mercy Hospital.

Dilag said they are investigating if the killing was politically motivated.

The victim was a leader for barangay chairman Jun Ynion, who is running for mayor in the city. Ynion offered a P200,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the assailant.
