PCG beefs up patrol for Eucharistic congress

Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has stepped up maritime security in Cebu in preparation for the 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC).

PCG spokesman Cmdr. Armand Balilo yesterday said two Coast Guard vessels and 12 aluminum boats manned by elite divers of the PCG’s special operations group would patrol the waters of Cebu.

Balilo said at least 20 bomb-sniffing dogs would also secure the venue.

The event, set on Jan. 24 to 31, is expected to draw around 15,000 participants.

It is the second time the Philippines is hosting the IEC.
