The Philippine Star

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – A man has been detained after he accidentally shot and killed his 12-year-old son as he was cleaning his gun in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, police officials said on Saturday.

El Porlonga Sr., 36, was cleaning his .45 caliber pistol at their home in Barangay Dao on Thursday when he accidentally pulled the trigger, hitting his son and namesake El Jr.

Porlonga rushed the boy to a nearby hospital, but the victim was declared dead on arrival by a doctor.

Chief Inspector Rogelio Alabata, spokesman for the Police Regional Office 9, said Porlonga surrendered to the police after the incident.

Alabata said investigators found out that the registration papers for Porlonga’s firearm expired last year.

He said the suspect would not be charged for violating the gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections since the incident occurred at home.

Porlonga will face charges of parricide and possession of loose firearm.
