Poll gun ban violations increase

MANILA, Philippines – The number of people arrested for violation of the election gun ban continues to increase, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said yesterday.

At least 95 people – 90 civilians, two law enforcers, a militiaman and two security guards – have been arrested at various checkpoints nationwide since last Sunday, the PNP said.  

The police also confiscated 79 guns and 331 assorted weapons and illegal items. The seized items include three gun replicas, two hand grenades and 325 assorted ammunition.

The PNP has reminded police officers manning the checkpoints to strictly follow the guidelines of the Commission on Elections.

Under the guidelines, the checkpoint area must be well-lit and properly identified with a signboard measuring three feet by four feet.

No person may be subjected to physical or body search without reasonable ground. The public is not obliged to open vehicle compartments, trunks or bags.

An officer with the rank of at least lieutenant or inspector should lead the checkpoint. Those manning the checkpoint should observe the rules on the proper wearing of police uniforms.

PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor said only police and Armed Forces of the Philippines personnel, members of government security agencies, as well as blue guards are allowed to carry firearms in their respective areas of responsibility.

“The penalty for violation of the election gun ban is not less than one year to six years imprisonment and perpetual disqualification from government service. If you are a government employee, the penalty carries disqualification from re- employment and you cannot vote,” Mayor said. – With Cecille Suerte Felipe, Almerc Dy
